East Gippsland Shire Council planning & contract debacle?

March 30th, 2009 · 7 Comments

East Gippsland Shire Council CEO, Steve Kozlowski is presiding over yet another self induced debacle. Council entered into a contract for the construction of the roads, footpaths, kerb & channel, underground drainage, water supply, waste water and electrical supply at the Tambo Bluff Estate without obtaining a Cultural Heritage Management Plan. What does that mean? [...]

Roadside native vegetation kills

March 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Whilst the objective of roadside vegetation is laudable, the native vegetation legislation is badly flawed in design and atrocious in implementation. Native roadside vegetation looks good. It gives the impression that the whole surrounding land is vegetated and running with little animals when in fact it encircles the open farmlands. It does provide an environment [...]

Mallacoota is 15th ‘Best Town in Australia’

March 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Don Ashby of Mallacoota emailed me today with the news that Australian Traveller had just published its list of the 100 Best Towns in Australia and that two Gippsland towns were in the top 100. Mallacoota was voted 15th and Walhalla was voted 76th. The assessment was based not on where the judges would like [...]

Forest fuel reduction – keep it simple

March 26th, 2009 · No Comments

There have been a number of letters to the editors of papers over the last month,  where the blame for the recent devastating fires has been  put down to climate change, the drought or the weather conditions which prevailed on 7 February 2009.  The fact is that climate change and  drought do not cause fires [...]

Ridiculous attacks on Pacific Brands

March 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment

Aren’t Kevin Rudd, Wayne Swan and the unions just the pits. The attacks by Rudd, Swan and the unions aided and abetted by a media intent only on selling more advertising, are blatant political opportunism. They are simply trying to make themselves look good to the ignorant public, most of whom will probably be stupid [...]

Third Supermarket for Paynesville

March 20th, 2009 · 2 Comments

It appears that the persistent applicant for a third supermarket in Paynesville may at last have Council approval. The proposal has met with vigorous opposition from a broad cross section of the public and has been the subject of appeals to VCAT involving both the Council and private objectors. Many of the objections have been [...]

Wilderness Society irrational & irresponsible

March 13th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Whilst most of us are environmentalists, it is the degree to which we worship! Most of us who live in rural environments, know the environment, respect it and love it. That is why we are here. We are pragmatic and practical, understanding that our lives depend upon our forests, our farms, our rivers and our [...]

ABC needs back up power for emergency transmissions

March 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Mallacoota, like many remote and isolated communities, has a very unstable power supply and the supply is very vulnerable to bushfire attack as the line traverses over a hundred Km of dense bush. In response to the considerable concern current in our community of Mallacoota over our inability to receive radio reception during emergency situations [...]

New Paynesville Community Centre building is only temporary

March 6th, 2009 · No Comments

Steve Kozlowski and David Moir didn’t tell us that the new building in the Paynesville Community precinct was only temporary. After committing to spending millions of dollars, why not make it a permanent building right from the start? These are the thoughts of the Paynesville community today when they saw the roof structure overhanging Fleischer [...]

Vale Bill Bolitho

March 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Bill passed away on 28th February 2009. We met through our common belief that the East Gippsland Shire Council was being run by the administration, for the administration rather than for the benefit of the ratepayers. We held the view that the administration needed to follow the policy directions of the Councillors rather than the [...]
